Rope is the mostly used for docking, anchoring, towing and rigging. Rope is very important to any boat or ship. Rigging on. a sailing ship is made up of ropes and or chains these are used to support the ships masts, yards and sails. Ropes or wire control the sails are known as running rigging or lines. 

 

Ropes or wires that control the sails are known collectively as running rigging or lines. Those that raise sails are called halyards while those that strike them are called downhauls. Ropes that adjust (trim) the sails are called sheets.
